Contractors show optimism regarding AI, but concerns remain

A recent Dodge Construction Network survey of 235 general and trade contractors throughout the U.S. shows most contractors believe artificial intelligence will significantly affect the construction industry, according to Construction Dive.

Eighty-five percent of respondents expect to spend less time on repetitive tasks because of AI, and 75% believe AI will help them learn from past projects via historical data.

Although contractors reportedly have lagged in their adoption of AI, 51% of respondents are actively evaluating several potential AI-related changes across their teams, and 40% are currently allocating a dedicated AI budget.

Eighty-six percent of large contractors believe AI will give them a competitive advantage compared with 69% of small or mid-sized contractors.

Contractors have used AI for tasks such as invoice processing and management, arbitration functions, safety improvements and contract review.

However, concerns remain regarding the technology; 57% of respondents said a lack of reliability or accuracy in AI output is a main concern, and 54% were concerned about data security and privacy risks. Additionally, 49% of smaller companies were concerned about the cost of investing in AI compared with 26% of large companies.
